Treasure hunting on vacation - Day 1, the Flea Market

Monday, March 7, 2011

As you drive toward Gatlinburg, TN you'll see many signs for antique shops and a few flea markets. There were so many that I could not decide which one to hit. The car was in much need of a good cleaning evidenced by a few days of the kid's snack wrappers in the back seats. So while Jon was at the car wash, I decided on the flea market. The huge sign boasting that it was the area's largest was the hook.

I had no plan on what to buy. I wasn't really looking for anything in particular. Those markets can be hit and miss so I usually stay at the booths outside where you are more likely to find odds and ends and not the year round booths indoors that sell everything from puppies to velvet Elvises - I was tempted on both counts. Oh, yes I was.

But I settled for this yellow vintage pyrex bowl - $3.00. Not only for looks or color, they are actually usable items. I saw the same bowl later on at an antique shop in Comfort, Texas for $23.00. I love it when that happens.

Pyrex

The old fan - $18.00

I regretted passing up on a fan at a garage sale about 5 years ago because I thought it was too large and not in better shape. I should have gotten it anyway since their prices have only increased, even for those types.

This one was marked $20.00. I saw others for 25.00 and 12.00 but this one was the nicest and smallest. So I came back armed with my standard question, "Is this your best price?"

He knocked off 2 bucks but it was better than nothing. The fan is heavy with a great flower design and cast iron base and it actually works. I need to clean it up a bit but not too much.

Vintage trouble light - $5.00.

Many times prices are not marked at flea markets so you have to ask what price they want for their items. I usually like that better so I can strike up a conversation about their booth. You'll find that some are really willing to tell you stories which is one thing I enjoy about the people there. This seller had piles of things to dig through - my favorite.

I didn't hesitate when I asked how much he wanted for the light and he said just five dollars. I have been looking for one forever but didn't want to go the ebay route. I love industrial design elements but they don't always come cheap. This light would not be less than $150.00 if I bought it wired and ready to go.

After successfully rewiring another light, Jon and I think we can do this ourselves and then it will hang over the kitchen sink. Since the bulb is visible, I'll replace it with a reproduction Edison bulb so it's more interesting and fits the modernism era of the light fixture, like this.

Also purchased that day: a hot pink dog tag for Charli dog, aka, Ruffy. - $5.00

a 1956 Home design book with good graphics - $2.00
a bunch of 45's (records) for church dance decorations - $5.00
2 pairs of new sunglasses - $6.00

It's good to be home

Sunday, March 6, 2011

I'm home!
It was a good vacation despite everyone being sick. We all have colds, strep throat or pink eye. Take your pick.

But my kids are not big complainers so they continued on with the fun. Thank heavens for a pediatrician who will call in a prescription cross country for you and a walk-in clinic who accepts your insurance!

I was hoping to keep the illness at bay for myself and Jon but it finally caught up to us. We drove all night to make it home on Friday but a string of bad weather and not feeling well forced us to stop early. We arrived home around 5 pm on Saturday and I found out that I was scheduled to work so I was able to get in a quick nap before I headed in at 10 pm. It made for a long night so I was thankful to meet my nice, warm fluffy bed this morning.

We had many memorable moments, side-splitting laughter and all-around thankfulness for family. Of course, no vacation is complete without a little shopping so I have some treasures to share this week.

I also saw the cutest thing ever that I will be sharing with you. If you have a pet, ever had a pet, are an animal lover or just like seeing something clever, cute and original - it's a MUST see. Stay tuned.

Now I am going to take two aspirin and will call you in the morning.

Have a great Sunday!

Driving in the Smoky Mtns

Took the back roads and missed the traffic jam. Jon recalculated his "internal GPS."

(A joke between us.)

Trae and I at the Aquarium while everyone else skied.

(a large fish had just swam by and he was shocked!)

At the trail ride where we all got free hats.

The only evidence I was on the ride.
My horse was the second from the right. Trae rode with me.

Road trip fun

Friday, February 25, 2011

I'll be blogging intermittently from the road for the next little while. We're enjoying a little time away as a family. We're breaking up a long road trip by staying in Gatlinburg, TN. for a few days up in the Smokey mountains. I think it is a well-kept secret. What a beautiful little town with friendly people.

Right now I am sitting in a warm and cozy cabin. The fire is crackling and my dog is curled up on the couch. She was out of sorts for a few days but has claimed a comfy spot so all is right in her world again.

Jon and the kids are in the hot tub relaxing their sore muscles after a day of skiing and snowboarding. I think Blair is hooked. She did a great job and only skied with Jon once. The rest of the time she went down the hill all by herself, beaming from ear to ear. Her instructor said she was the most mature 5 year-old she has ever taught. That made me more happy than her ability to ski.

While they were out, Trae and I enjoyed a day at the aquarium. He bought a toy laser gun and "shot" at the fish and got up close and personal to some penguins.

Today we are heading out to explore a few more places and then we'll be on the road tomorrow. We're exchanging ski gear for swim gear as we head into the Lone Star state to visit Jon's parents and hopefully I'll get to see my mom's family as well. There will be plenty of real Mexican food to enjoy and some real barbecue. It only happens once every couple of years so indulging isn't so bad.

I'll be back soon with scenes from San Antonio and maybe an antique shop or two along the way.

Enjoy the weekend!
