I think I have a mirror in the garage - DIY

Monday, May 21, 2012

I did and it has been collecting dust for a while.

I used it in my last home but haven't done anything with it here. And although it's not a permanent solution for the bathroom mirror, I've gotta work with what I've got! So until l I find a smaller and hopefully round mirror that's a little on the rustic side, this will go in its place -

after I sand it a bit and put on another coat of paint -
and clean it...but you get the idea.

Good thing it didn't sell at my last garage sale.

Third time = charm

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

The state of the Salon style art wall at this very moment.

The state of the entrance wall at this very moment.

I stealthily saved this mirror from the side of the road this morning.

It was the exact shape I have been picturing but couldn't find so I settled for the others.

Third times a charm! (and heavy too)

Again with the entry way mirror - Friday finds

Friday, July 15, 2011

I noticed a few weeks ago that there was a new thrift store in town so I put it on my radar. I finally got the chance to visit and was pleasantly surprised by their inventory of vintage and antique items as well as most of their prices. Again I was drawn to the mirror and old frame section. I had to put blinders on when it came to the furniture.

When I was looking for a mirror to go in our small entry way, I originally wanted an oval shaped piece since the staircase, wall and doorway are so boxy. Because I couldn't find one, I settled on the rectangular mirror but still wasn't feeling it. Then I found the oval one at the new shop for $2.99 so I took it home to see how it would look. I know bold/ornate patterns aren't every one's favorite but if you were me, which mirror would you prefer?

Have a good weekend, ya'll!

Friday finds

Friday, June 17, 2011

For a while, I've been scouring thrift shops for that ornate and, ok, slightly gaudy mirror I needed for the entry way. I had a few options with some frames I had on hand but needed to have a mirror cut to fit. Knowing I probably wouldn't get around to doing that anytime soon, I waited.
The waiting finally paid off when I stopped by the Goodwill and found this mirror for $1.99. It was a dull, dark gold color until I used Rub 'n Buff in Gold Leaf to spruce it up.

I stopped by a garage sale on a whim on the way home from taking the kids to school. Fridays are the big garage sale days around here. So the .50 cent owl who lost it's top is put to good use on the craft table. I'm debating on whether to spray him some other color.

I like anything in galvanized metal so when I spotted this minnow bucket for only $2.00, it came home with me.

And now it holds only plants, no minnows.

Under $5.00 and happy.

The art of reflection - mirrors and questions

Thursday, April 14, 2011

I have been searching for that mirror - the ornate and maybe slightly gaudy one to put on the wall that we have been working on. It will hang nearer to the bottom of the stairs and closer to the door for that last minute check.

Near completion!

And after all my searching, still no luck. So until I find that perfect one, I decided to look at what I had on hand which was an old frame. Then I decided to go to the thrift shop one more time and that's when I spotted the biggie. I can always have a mirror cut to fit any of these. I may have to slightly age the sides of the mirror but that's down the road.

The choices

The large frame and the gold one are my thrift store finds. ($22.00 & $2.97) The one in the middle was my mom's that held her wedding portrait. (priceless) I really think the large one is too big for the space so it's probably between the smaller two. Wouldn't the large one make a great pin board? I'm thinking so.

I enjoy details.

Or maybe I should forget both of those and just stick with the good old sunburst mirror?

You can help -Which would you use?
